Pick Apple News+ if
you read several of its titles every week on Apple devices and want magazines as well as newspapers.
Pick Newzflash if
you followed a link to one story and want to pay for that story alone.
A library on Apple devices
Apple News+ is a subscription to a catalog. Apple lists the US price at $12.99 a month after a one-month trial for new subscribers, and it is included in Apple One Premier at $39.95 a month. The bundle covers magazines, newspapers Apple has licensed, and audio stories. Family Sharing extends it to up to six people. It runs on Apple devices only.
That is a strong offer for the right reader. If you already live in Apple News, read several of its titles each week, and want magazines as well as newspapers, the monthly price spreads across a lot of reading. For a household, Family Sharing does the rest.
A story on the publisher's own site
Newzflash is a different shape. The reader opens the article on the publisher's site, sees a price between $0.05 and $0.50, and pays that amount from a prepaid balance. One wallet works across partner publishers. Nothing renews the next month.
The money also goes to a different place. In the bundle, the reader pays Apple, and the publisher is paid under its deal to be included. On Newzflash, the reader pays for the article on the site that published it. A reader without an Apple device cannot use Apple News+ at all, and a publisher outside Apple's catalog has no place in the bundle.
The honest caveat
Newzflash does not give you a library. There are no magazines, audio stories, or catalog to browse. If a reader wants to explore widely every week, the bundle is the better product. Per-story prices also add up when someone opens many stories in a month, and a monthly plan can be the cheaper choice for that reader.
Newzflash is still onboarding publishers across North America, so the wallet only helps on sites that have joined.
What $12.99 has to beat
At $0.05 to $0.50 a story, a reader needs roughly 26 to 260 unlocks in a month before Newzflash costs as much as the US Apple News+ price. A reader who opens a handful of stories a month will spend far less on Newzflash. A reader who wants the library, and reads across it, will get more from the bundle. The monthly price only makes sense when the reader would otherwise have bought many of these stories one at a time.
How to decide
Pick Apple News+ for a reader who wants a library, lives in Apple's app, and reads across many titles. Pick Newzflash for a reader who wants one story, does not want a plan to manage, and arrived on a publisher's site. These are different purchases, and it is better to say so than to put them in one table.
