The closest product, with a different unit
A reader registers once, adds money, and spends it on participating sites. The money stays in the account, and Axate's help pages say there is no minimum weekly or monthly charge. Readers pay no upfront fee. Publishers set their own prices and receive a share of what is spent.
Newzflash works the same way at the point of purchase: a balance, a visible price, one unlock. The difference is the unit. Axate sells a free point, passes, and subscriptions alongside articles. Newzflash sells the article and nothing else.
The cap is Axate's strongest feature
Axate lets a publisher set a free point. After a reader has paid for a set number of stories on one title in a day or a week, that title is free for the rest of the period. Some titles set the point after a single article, and others set it higher. For a reader who worries about the bill on a site they visit often, the cap is the clearest answer. It is a real reason to choose Axate for a publisher whose readers come back to one title.
Newzflash has no cap. Every article is priced on its own, between $0.05 and $0.50, and the reader sees that price before the unlock. The balance does not roll into a subscription and does not make the rest of the week free. A publisher that wants a ceiling on what a reader pays should use Axate. A publisher that wants one visible price per story should use Newzflash.
What a heavy reader saves
A heavy reader on a capped title pays less on Axate than on Newzflash. That is the honest cost of Newzflash's model. Each article is priced on its own, so a reader who opens twenty stories on one site pays for twenty. The argument for that is simplicity: the reader always knows the price of the next unlock. The argument for Axate's cap is that the publisher, not the reader, decides when reading stops being charged.
Where each wallet is live
Axate grew up in the UK, and its publishers include local news titles. Newzflash is onboarding publishers across North America. A wallet only helps a reader on the sites that have joined it, so the practical test is which sites your readers already open.
Card handling is not a reason to choose either one. Axate says card details are held by Braintree, a PayPal company, not by Axate. Newzflash uses Stripe and does not store card details.
How to decide
Pick Axate if your readers return to a few titles and you want their spend to level off, with passes and subscriptions available from the same wallet. Pick Newzflash if readers arrive from a link, read one piece, and should see one price before they pay. Both keep the reader on the publisher's site, and both leave unspent balance in the reader's hands.
